Beach guide
LEGENDARY ZICATELA SURF
Known globally as the “Mexican Pipeline,” Playa Zicatela is the heart of Puerto Escondido’s surf culture. This powerful beach break features heavy, fast barrels that attract professional surfers from every corner of the world. Even if you aren’t paddling out into the massive swell, the long stretch of golden sand offers an energetic oceanfront strip with unforgettable sunsets.
Playa La Punta Zicatela
Located at the southern tip of Zicatela, La Punta offers a noticeably more laid-back, bohemian vibe. Protected by a rocky headland, the waves here are softer and more manageable, making it the primary hub for longboarders, intermediate surfers, and surf schools. The unpaved sandy streets behind the beach are a favorite hangout spot for travelers to unwind after a day in the water.
Playa Naranjos
For those seeking true solitude away from the town center, Playa Naranjos provides a raw, wild coastal escape. This expansive, undeveloped stretch of shoreline offers miles of open sand framed by coastal vegetation and nature. With virtually no commercial development, it is ideal for quiet walks, taking in the untouched scenery. Strong currents mean swimming requires extreme caution, but the serenity is unmatched.
Playa Bacocho
Playa Bacocho is a long, picturesque expanse known for its soft sand, gentle sea breezes, and stunning palm tree backdrops. It is especially famous for hosting local sea turtle conservation efforts, where visitors can participate in sunset hatchling releases. While the open ocean swells can create strong shorebreaks, Bacocho is perfect for long beach runs and sunbathing.
Playa Roca Blanca
Named after the distinct white-tinted island rock just off its shore, Playa Roca Blanca offers an authentic coastal getaway west of Puerto Escondido. The shoreline spans both open ocean and sheltered lagoon waters, providing options for quiet seaside relaxation. Local thatched-roof palapas dot the beach, offering shaded lounging right at the water’s edge.
Playa Agua Blanca
Playa Agua Blanca is a spot famous for its unique tidal rock pools. At low tide, natural saltwater basins form along the shoreline, creating calm, warm swimming holes ideal for soaking and relaxing away from the main ocean surf.
Zipolite / San Agustinillo
A short drive down the coast reveals two distinct beach towns side-by-side. Zipolite is famous for its free-spirited, bohemian atmosphere and holds the distinction of being Mexico’s official clothing-optional beach. Just minutes away lies San Agustinillo, a charming, tranquil fishing village nestled in a small bay where calmer waters permit safe swimming and bodyboarding.
